I am Caroline Stroeks, a sumi-e artist based in Leiden, The Netherlands. In this city I studied Art History, majoring in prints and drawings, and took several drawing and painting courses.

About 15 years ago the Japanese artist Kumi Kuwamura taught me the first principles of sumi-e, a technique in which you work with self-grinded ink on washi (rice) paper. The ink flows easily on the washi paper and adjusting a line is not possible. It demands attention and concentration, but at the same time offers relaxation.

Sumi-e continues to fascinate me and has given me a lot, on both a creative and a personal level. I enjoy sharing the experiences I have had with this technique in the form of workshops and courses.
